Drivers Who Transport Their Own Children

Drivers who transport their own children

(Including Grandchildren or other children for whom they are Caregiver)

School bus operators may allow drivers to transport pre-school children in their care on the drivers’ assigned school bus route.  Approval from the Consortium shall not be required but will be limited to the following conditions:

  • Maximum two dependent children on a school bus
  • Subject to space availability on the school bus
  • All additional seat and security restrain equipment shall be at the cost of the operator and shall meet all government standards and legislative requirements

School age children of drivers may only ride the bus with their parent if the parent/driver’s route services the home school for the child’s residence unless prior permission is granted by the Consortium. Students will be removed from their home bus when riding their parent’s bus.

If the parent is ill, quits or otherwise not driving their route then it is their responsibility to make alternate arrangements for their child to get to school on these days.  For greater clarity, the student may not ride their regular home bus on these days as they have been removed from the manifest.

The Consortium reserves the right to cancel this privilege at any time.

Understanding the limitations, drivers who meet the requirements to transport their own children, grandchildren or children in their care and have permission from their operator, complete the following (incomplete forms will be returned for completion possibly delaying processing)

The completed form is to be submitted to the Consortium annually prior to the children riding with their parent or prior to the start of the school year.

Forms received after August 7, 2026 may not be processed for September 8, 2026 and parents should have an alternate plan for their children until they are assigned.

It is understood school aged children who are on the bus prior to the start of the contracted run/route will be the responsibility of the Operator until the first stop on the route and the Operator shall provide evidence to the Board that the children are covered by the Operator’s insurance when proof of insurance is submitted.
